Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD), is when the contents of the stomach are pushed back up into the esophagus. The contents of the regurgitation can irritate or damage the esophagus. The contents of the stomach usually include acid and pepsin (a digestive enyzme) which are produced by the stomach. It might also contain bile from the intensintes. The acid portion of the liquid is the most dangerous.

Acid reflux disease is a chronic problem. Once it starts it may never be reversed. Treatment for acid reflux is usually an indefinite process.
