Acid Reflux Disease - Treatment

Treating acid reflux can be a tricky and painful process. Here are some of the methods of treatment:

General Lifestyle Changes - This is the most common treatment - to change foods and habits.

Antacids - Antacids are the most common type of acid reflux treatment. They can neutralize the acid forming in the stomach, but generally only for a short time.

Proton pump inhibitors - One of the most effective types of drugs is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), such as Prilosec. These block the acid production in the stomach.

Pro-motility drugs - Drugs such as Reglan stimulate the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract (the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon) and strengthen the contractions to prevent acid from passing.

Foam barriers - Tables can be ingested that form a layer of foam that floats on the stomach contents and neutralize the acid. Gaviscon is one brand of foam barrier.

Surgery - Surgery is a last resort if medications do not treat the problem.

Endoscopy - There are several small, endoscopic procedures that can help treat acid reflux disease. One of these is a manual cinching of the lower esophageal sphincter.
